OSHA 29 CFR 1926.51 sets minimum toilet ratios: one toilet for crews of 20 or fewer, one toilet and one urinal per 40 workers up to 200 workers, and one toilet and one urinal per 50 workers over 200. These are minimums, not targets — sites with tight schedules or heavy overtime routinely exceed them.
OSHA requires accessible handwashing facilities on every construction site. Water-based handwashing stations meet the standard; hand-sanitizer alone does not for tasks involving material handling before meals. Potable drinking water — separate from wash water — is a distinct requirement.

Service frequency is not specified in the OSHA standard but must be adequate to keep facilities sanitary. Weekly service is the industry baseline for small crews; twice-weekly or daily service is standard for larger crews or heavy-use sites. Documented service logs are useful evidence during audits.
Federal standards do not require separate male and female units on smaller crews, but industry best practice is to designate at least one unit for women once female workers are on site. Interior door latches must function reliably on every unit.
OSHA requires facilities to remain accessible and usable in all working conditions. In North Dakota winters this means cleared paths, freeze-resistant chemicals, and often a heated luxury trailer for extended winter projects. Weather-related service disruptions must be resolved promptly.
