Hygiene is the entire product in portable sanitation. Clean units drive guest satisfaction, worker morale, and post-event reviews more than any other single factor. This guide covers the hygiene practices every reputable provider should follow — and what to expect from a well-run rental.
Pre-Delivery Cleaning Standards
Every unit leaving our facility is pressure-washed inside and out with commercial-grade disinfectants, deodorized with EPA-registered treatments, restocked with fresh toilet tissue and hand-sanitizer, and inspected for structural damage. Cracked interior walls, missing handles, faulty ventilation stacks, and broken door latches disqualify a unit from delivery.
On-Site Service Checklist
Every service visit follows the same checklist: pump the holding tank fully, refresh chemical treatment, restock tissue, wipe down interior seat and interior walls, clean the floor, check the door latch and hinge, restock the handwashing station if paired, and record the visit with date, time, and technician signature.
Chemical Treatment That Works
Modern portable toilet chemicals rely on biodegradable, low-formaldehyde formulations. They control odor, break down waste, and prevent gas buildup without leaving harsh residue. Cold-weather chemicals include glycol-based antifreeze rated to sub-zero temperatures. Ask your provider what formulations they use; low-cost providers often skimp here.
Ventilation and Odor Control
Every unit has an internal vent stack that pulls air out and away from the interior. Verify the vent is unobstructed. Placement matters — units in direct sun run hotter, which accelerates odor. Whenever possible, place units in partial shade with the vent facing away from prevailing wind.
Interior Amenities to Verify
A well-stocked unit includes toilet tissue, an interior hand-sanitizer dispenser, a functioning ventilation system, working door latch and interior lock, a bench seat with a lifted lid, and a working urinal on male-designated units. Any missing item should be reported to the provider immediately.
Handwashing Station Hygiene
Foot-pump handwashing stations require regular restocking of fresh water, soap, and paper towels. Gray-water tanks fill quickly during heavy use — a full gray-water tank means the station is out of service. Schedule daily restocks for high-traffic events.
What to Do If Something Is Wrong
Call your provider immediately. Any reputable rental company will dispatch a technician to correct a service issue within a defined response time — usually two to four hours for emergency response. Photograph the issue if you can, and note the time and unit location.
